Getting Started

Start here, then use the detailed reference below when you need exact rules or edge cases.

Choose Smallfolk

Select Smallfolk if you want straightforward progression through ordinary settled Town life rather than managing an institution.

Join a Town

Reputation only advances while you are a member of a Town.

Stay actively involved

Online, non-AFK Town play accumulates qualifying time and awards Reputation automatically.

Check your progress

Use /reputation to see your level, Standing, Town, Loyalty multiplier, next milestone and unlocked perks.

Build Loyalty

Remain continuously in the same Town for 7, 30 and 60 days to increase future Reputation gains.

Restrictions

Know these before choosing the Origin
  • Smallfolk cannot found Towns; the Origin is designed around being a resident of an existing Town.
  • Reputation does not advance while offline, AFK or outside a Town.
  • Changing Towns keeps your earned Reputation XP and level but resets your current Town Loyalty streak.
  • The Reputation chat suffix is cosmetic; hiding it does not remove progression or perks.
  • Leaving Smallfolk removes the active Smallfolk-managed permissions/suffix but historical Reputation XP is retained if you later return.

Overview

The Smallfolk Origin represents the ordinary settled population of Vastala: residents who build their standing through long-term participation in a Town rather than by founding a Noble House, owning an independent estate, running a Merchant House, joining the Clergy, or living as a Nomad.

Smallfolk progression is built around two values:

  1. Reputation — permanent progression earned from qualifying active playtime.
  2. Loyalty — a continuous relationship with the same Town that increases the rate at which Reputation is earned.

Smallfolk is deliberately less administratively heavy than Origins such as Noble, Burgher or Clergy. Its progression is personal and community-based rather than centred on running a separate organisation.

How Reputation is Earned

Smallfolk Reputation is earned only while the player is:

  • online;
  • currently a member of a Town; and
  • not AFK.

The system samples qualifying playtime and only awards Reputation after a full 60 seconds of valid activity have accumulated. Simply remaining offline does not generate Reputation XP, and time spent without a Town does not count.

The base rate is 100 Reputation XP per qualifying minute.

A level is derived from total Reputation XP. Every 6,000 XP represents another level, beginning at Level 1. At the base rate this is approximately one level for each hour of qualifying playtime before loyalty bonuses are considered.

The level cap is 50.

Reputation XP is the authoritative long-term value. If the displayed level ever becomes inconsistent, the system recalculates the level from stored Reputation.

Loyalty to a Town

Loyalty represents an uninterrupted association with the same Town.

When a Smallfolk player joins a Town, the system begins a loyalty streak for that Town. Remaining continuously associated with it grants a multiplier to future Reputation gains:

Less than 7 days1.00x Reputation
7+ days1.10x Reputation
30+ days1.20x Reputation
60+ days1.25x Reputation

Loyalty is based on continuity with the Town rather than on accumulated Reputation. Moving to a different Town begins a new loyalty streak. Leaving Towny entirely clears the current loyalty streak.

Importantly, changing Town does NOT erase the player's existing Reputation XP or level. A respected Smallfolk player does not become a new character simply because they move settlement; what they lose is the loyalty bonus associated with their previous home.

The loyalty age itself tracks the continuous Town relationship, while the actual Reputation XP still requires qualifying online, non-AFK play.

Loyalty timeline
Day 0Join Town
Day 7First bonus
Day 30Higher bonus
Day 60Highest Loyalty tier

Loyalty can mature while you are offline, but only active, non-AFK Town play generates Reputation.

Example: changing Towns Alice joins Westmere on June 1. On June 8 her first Loyalty bonus reaches +10%. If she leaves on June 20, the Reputation she already earned stays, but her Loyalty streak resets in the next Town.

Levels, Titles and Perks

Smallfolk progression has five major standing milestones.

Level 1 — the Common

All Smallfolk begin here.

  • Unlock:
  • /workbench

Level 10 — the Known

  • Unlocks:
  • /trash
  • /nick

Level 20 — the Respected

  • Unlocks:
  • /hat
  • /stonecutter

Level 30 — the Esteemed

  • Unlock:
  • /anvil

Level 50 — the Beloved

This is the maximum Smallfolk level.

  • Unlock:
  • /echest

The system grants only the direct permissions belonging to the current Smallfolk progression. It does not overwrite unrelated inherited permissions or ranks.

Reputation Titles and Chat Suffix

Each major reputation tier has a corresponding social title:

Level 1The Common
Level 10The Known
Level 20The Respected
Level 30The Esteemed
Level 50The Beloved

The Smallfolk system can display the current title as a chat suffix. Players who prefer a purchased, cosmetic, staff or other suffix can hide the Smallfolk suffix without losing their actual Reputation or perks.

Use:

/reputation suffix off

or:

/reputation suffix on

Disabling the suffix is purely cosmetic. It does not pause Reputation, lower a level, remove unlocked commands, or reset loyalty.

The /reputation Display

Use:

/reputation

to view the current Smallfolk progression state.

The display includes information such as:

  • current level and standing;
  • current Town;
  • length of the current loyalty streak;
  • current loyalty multiplier;
  • whether Reputation can currently be earned;
  • progress toward the next level or standing; and
  • perks already unlocked.

This is the main command Smallfolk players need during normal play.

Town Changes and Leaving a Town

The Town is important to Smallfolk progression, but Towny remains authoritative for actual Town membership.

When a Smallfolk player leaves a Town:

  • their current loyalty Town is cleared;
  • their loyalty start date is cleared;
  • partially accumulated qualifying seconds are cleared; but
  • their total Reputation XP and resulting level are retained.

When they later join another Town, a new loyalty streak begins there.

This allows Reputation to represent the player's broader social experience while Loyalty represents stability in one particular community.

AFK and Offline Behaviour

Reputation cannot be farmed by simply leaving the game running while AFK. The progression timer checks whether the player is considered AFK and excludes those periods from qualifying XP.

Likewise, being offline never directly awards Reputation XP.

The age of an uninterrupted Town membership can continue to mature as a loyalty relationship, but the multiplier only matters when the player returns and earns actual qualifying Reputation.

Leaving the Smallfolk Origin

Changing Origin is an administrative action rather than a normal self-service command.

When a player is no longer Smallfolk, the system removes only the permissions and active reputation suffix that it manages. It does not indiscriminately clear other LuckPerms permissions.

The player's accumulated Reputation XP is retained. Their current Town loyalty is not retained as an active Smallfolk streak.

This means a player who later returns to Smallfolk can retain their historical Reputation progression while still needing to establish a fresh continuous Town loyalty relationship.

Important Commands

/reputation

View Reputation, level, Town loyalty and perks.

/reputation suffix on

Show the Smallfolk reputation suffix.

/reputation suffix off

Hide the Smallfolk reputation suffix.

The normal Smallfolk system intentionally has a small command surface. Most progression happens automatically through ordinary active Town life rather than through a separate management interface.

Origin summarySmallfolk is the settled community Origin. Its mechanics reward remaining active in Town life over time, while allowing players to move communities without deleting all previous progression. Reputation represents long-term social standing; Loyalty represents commitment to one current Town. The Origin is intentionally straightforward compared with institution-heavy roles such as Noble, Burgher or Clergy.
