Getting Started

Start here, then use the detailed reference below when you need exact rules or edge cases.

Choose Freeholder

Select Freeholder if you want a persistent independent homestead rather than Town residence.

Find valid wilderness

Stand outside Towny land and outside any existing protected claim.

Bring £750

Use /freehold create. The current chunk is saved as the founding location while you complete setup.

Name the estate

Set a public Freehold name and motto. The first protected chunk is created before the founding cost is taken.

Expand carefully

Use /freehold claim to add side-connected chunks for £250 each, up to five chunks total, while keeping upkeep paid.

Restrictions

Know these before choosing the Origin
  • A Freeholder may own only one Freehold and cannot create one while they are a Town resident.
  • Claims cannot overlap Towny land or another protected claim.
  • The estate is limited to five chunks, and every added chunk must preserve one contiguous side-connected estate.
  • Founding costs £750 and each additional claimed chunk costs £250.
  • Daily upkeep is £75 base + £25 per claimed chunk (£100–£200/day). Outstanding debt prevents purchasing more land.
  • The final chunk cannot be individually unclaimed; removing the estate requires the confirmed abandonment flow.

Overview

The Freeholder Origin is for players who want to hold a small piece of independent land without founding or joining a Town as their political home.

A Freehold is not a Town. It does not create a Towny government, Mayor, nation, resident roster, town bank, or Towny claim network. Instead, it creates a small personally owned estate in wilderness using protected land claims managed by the Freeholder system.

The core identity is simple:

Find wilderness -> establish an estate -> expand contiguously -> pay upkeep -> maintain a name and motto -> live independently.

A Freeholder may own only one Freehold at a time, and the estate is deliberately limited in size.

Establishing a Freehold

Use:

/freehold create

while standing in the wilderness chunk where the estate should begin.

To found a Freehold, the player must:

  • hold the Freeholder Origin;
  • not already own a Freehold;
  • not currently be a Town resident;
  • stand outside Towny land;
  • stand outside any existing protected claim; and
  • have the £750 founding cost available.

The system saves the selected founding chunk when creation begins, so moving around while answering the setup prompts does not silently change which chunk will become the estate.

The player is prompted in chat for the Freehold's name and related details. Freehold names may be up to 32 characters, while the motto may be up to 80 characters.

Protection is created and verified before the player is charged. If the underlying protected region cannot be created or ownership cannot be assigned correctly, the Freehold is not finalised and the player is not charged.

A successful Freehold begins with one claimed chunk and an upkeep date 24 hours later.

Land Protection

Freehold territory is automatically protected, with ownership tied to the estate and its claimed chunks.

Where available, BlueMap may display the holding visually. A map marker is only a reference and does not create ownership by itself.

Because a Freehold is independent wilderness land, its claims cannot overlap:

  • Towny land; or
  • another protected claim.

A player cannot create a Freehold inside a Town and cannot expand one into Town territory later.

Expanding the Estate

Use:

/freehold claim

while standing in the wilderness chunk to be added.

Each additional chunk currently costs £250.

Expansion follows several rules:

  • The estate may contain at most 5 chunks.
  • The new chunk must share a SIDE with an existing Freehold claim.
  • Diagonal contact alone is not enough.
  • The new chunk cannot overlap Towny land.
  • The new chunk cannot overlap another protected claim.
  • Outstanding Freehold upkeep debt blocks further expansion until paid.

The side-adjacency rule ensures that a Freehold remains one connected holding rather than a scattered set of unrelated mini-claims.

As with founding, the protection is created and checked before the claim is treated as valid. If protection creation or ownership fails, the system rolls the attempt back rather than charging for an unusable claim.

Unclaiming Land

A Freeholder can remove the chunk they are currently standing in with:

/freehold unclaim

There are two important safeguards:

  1. The final remaining chunk cannot be individually unclaimed. To remove the entire estate, use the abandonment process instead.
  2. A chunk cannot be removed if doing so would split the remaining estate into disconnected pieces.

There is no refund for voluntarily unclaiming an expansion chunk.

The system removes the underlying protected claim before changing the estate. If the protection cannot be removed safely, the Freehold is left unchanged.

Upkeep

Freeholds have daily upkeep. The amount scales with the number of claimed chunks.

The current formula is:

£75 base upkeep + £25 per claimed chunk per day.

This produces the following current daily costs:

1 chunk£100/day
2 chunks£125/day
3 chunks£150/day
4 chunks£175/day
5 chunks£200/day

The first payment is due 24 hours after the estate is founded.

Logging out does not erase or avoid upkeep. When the system next processes the estate, missed days are recognised. However, the debt system is deliberately capped so an inactive player cannot return to effectively unlimited arrears.

Maximum Freehold debt is seven days of the estate's current daily upkeep.

For example, a five-chunk Freehold with £200 daily upkeep can accumulate at most £1,400 in tracked arrears under the current rules.

Automatic Payment vs Arrears

An ordinary on-time daily upkeep payment can still be taken automatically if:

  • there was no previous debt;
  • exactly one payment has become due; and
  • the player has enough money.

Once the estate is already in arrears, or multiple days were missed, the system does NOT wait until the player's balance becomes large enough and then unexpectedly drain the whole amount.

Instead, the arrears remain visible and must be paid deliberately with:

/freehold pay

The payment command clears the full current debt if the player can afford it. If the player does not have enough money, nothing is taken.

Outstanding debt also prevents purchasing additional estate land until it is settled.

Freehold Name and Motto

The estate has a public name and motto.

Use:

/freehold rename

and answer the chat prompt to change the estate name.

Use:

/freehold motto

to change the motto.

Current limits:

Freehold nameup to 32 characters
Mottoup to 80 characters

These are descriptive identity fields and do not affect protection strength or upkeep.

Freehold Information and GUI

Use:

/freehold

or:

/freehold manage

to open the Freehold management interface once an estate exists.

Use:

/freehold info

to view information including:

  • current holder;
  • estate name and motto;
  • number of claimed chunks;
  • maximum claim size;
  • current daily upkeep; and
  • any outstanding debt.

The management menu also provides access to common estate actions such as expansion, information, renaming, motto management, unclaiming and abandonment.

Abandoning a Freehold

A Freehold can be permanently abandoned with:

/freehold abandon

Because this removes all Freehold protection, abandonment uses a confirmation window. The player must run the command again within 15 seconds.

Abandonment:

  • removes all managed Freehold claim protection;
  • removes the active estate data;
  • provides no refund for founding or expansion costs; and
  • clears the estate from the Freeholder map integration.

The protection removal is safety-checked. If one or more protected claims cannot be removed safely, the Freehold remains intact.

Abandonment removes the Freehold protection system. It does not magically delete buildings, chests, roads or other physical blocks the player constructed there.

Freeholder and Towny

Freeholder is deliberately separate from Towny political settlement.

A Freeholder cannot establish an estate while they are a Town resident. The estate cannot overlap a Town. It should therefore be understood as an independent holding rather than a miniature Town replacement.

Towny remains authoritative for Town land; the Freehold system remains authoritative for Freeholder estates.

Changing or Resetting the Freeholder Origin

A player cannot change away from the Freeholder Origin while they still own an active Freehold.

The estate must first be abandoned with:

/freehold abandon

This ensures the estate and its protected land are cleared before the Origin changes.

Origin summaryThe Freeholder Origin is built for small-scale independent land ownership. It gives a player a protected personal estate without recreating the political structure of Towny. The trade-off is deliberate limitation: a maximum of five connected chunks, recurring upkeep, wilderness-only expansion, and no automatic Town government. It is an Origin for living independently, not for bypassing the settlement system with a private five-chunk kingdom.
