Getting Started

Start here, then use the detailed reference below when you need exact rules or edge cases.

Choose Knight

Selecting Knight creates your record, but you begin as an Unrecognised Knight rather than automatically being historically knighted.

Find a Noble to officiate

A nearby Noble begins the staged ceremony with /knight officiate [player].

Complete formal Knighthood

Accept, kneel, hear the Noble’s charge, speak your own Oath of Knighthood and complete the accolade.

Choose your relationships

Knighthood does not create Fealty automatically. You may remain independent, swear Fealty, join an Order or mentor a Squire later.

Build Honour and history

Use meaningful oaths, commendations, Order milestones and Squire progression to improve Standing and your permanent record.

Restrictions

Know these before choosing the Origin
  • Choosing Knight does not make you formally knighted; a Noble must complete the ceremony first.
  • Knight is a social Origin, not a combat class: it does not provide arbitrary damage/armour bonuses or repetitive guard quests.
  • Formal Knighthood and Fealty are separate. The Noble who knights you does not automatically become your liege.
  • A Knight may hold only one active Oath of Fealty at a time.
  • Taking a Squire requires formal Knighthood and at least Recognised Standing; the target must consent and cannot already serve another mentor.
  • Active Order leadership, Squire mentorship and active oaths must be resolved before the Knight Origin can be reset cleanly.

Overview

The Knight Origin is a social order built around formal Knighthood, oaths, Honour, Fealty, Knightly Orders, squires, commendations, heraldry and permanent history.

It is not a combat class. The system does not grant arbitrary damage buffs, armour bonuses or recurring MMO-style guard quests. A Knight's progression comes from socially meaningful acts and relationships.

The core Knight identity is:

Receive formal Knighthood -> swear or uphold oaths -> build Honour -> enter Orders or Fealty -> mentor squires -> earn commendations and milestones -> build a permanent historical record.

Unrecognised Knights

Selecting the Knight Origin does not automatically mean another player has formally knighted the character.

A new Knight begins as an Unrecognised Knight. They have chosen the social Origin, but still need a Noble to conduct a formal knighting ceremony before the system considers them fully officiated.

This distinction prevents a player from becoming historically knighted merely by clicking the Origin selector.

Formal Knighting Ceremony

A Noble begins the process while standing near an Unrecognised Knight:

/knight officiate [player]

The candidate may accept or deny the call to Knighthood. The ceremony is physical and requires the participants to remain near one another.

After accepting, the candidate is instructed to kneel by sneaking. The officiating Noble speaks a charge in normal chat. The candidate then speaks their Oath of Knighthood as part of the staged ceremony. Once the required words have been recorded, the Noble completes the accolade with the officiation flow.

The system deliberately allows custom wording rather than forcing every ceremony to use one identical script.

Formal Knighthood:

  • marks the Knight as officially recognised by the system;
  • records the officiating Noble and historical oath;
  • grants 2 Honour for the Knighthood oath; and
  • unlocks the parts of Knight society that require formal recognition.

The ceremony can be cancelled if the participants need to stop.

Formal knighting sequence
Unknown Knight→Noble officiates→Candidate accepts & kneels→Charge + spoken oath→Accolade recorded

The ceremony records the officiating Noble, the charge and the Knight’s exact oath in permanent history.

Knighthood is Not Fealty

This is one of the most important rules in the system.

A Noble who knights a player does NOT automatically become that Knight's liege.

Formal Knighthood establishes status. Fealty is a separate voluntary oath relationship made afterward.

This allows independent Knights, Order-focused Knights and Knights sworn to a different Noble to exist without every knighting ceremony secretly creating a political bond.

Honour

Honour is the Knight's social reputation score. It ranges up to 100 and changes through specific meaningful actions rather than generic combat grinding.

Current Honour values include:

First meaningful social oath+2
Oath of Knighthood+2
Joining a Knightly Order+3
Becoming Marshal+3
Becoming Grandmaster+5
Formal commendation+5
A recommended Squire later becomes Knight+8
Honourable release after 7+ days Fealty+3
Honourable release after 30+ days Fealty+5
Breaking Fealty-15
Breaking a personal vow-5
Dishonourable expulsion from an Order-10

Honour represents remembered conduct. It is not a currency and is not spent to buy abilities.

Standing

Knightly Standing is derived from Honour AND historical milestones. A high raw Honour value alone is not always sufficient for the highest social ranks.

Current thresholds are:

Unprovenbelow 15 Honour
Recognised15+ Honour
Honoured30+ Honour, with a recorded social oath
Distinguished50+ Honour, social oath, and at least one major milestone
Renowned75+ Honour, social oath, and at least two major milestones

The social-oath requirement means higher Knightly status is tied to actual participation in the institution rather than isolated point accumulation.

Major milestones come from important events such as meaningful Order leadership or bringing a Squire through to Knighthood.

Use /knight standing and /knight profile to inspect progress.

Oath of Fealty

Fealty is the formal relationship between a Knight and a Noble liege.

A Noble offers Fealty to a formally knighted player with:

/knight oath offer [Knight] [oath words]

The Knight receives the words of the proposed oath and may accept or deny it.

A Knight can hold only one active Oath of Fealty at a time.

When Fealty is accepted:

  • the liege relationship is recorded;
  • the oath enters the Knight's history;
  • the social-oath requirement for higher Standing can be satisfied; and
  • if the Noble heads an active Noble House, the Knight is mirrored into that House as a Household Knight.

The Noble House system does not separately invent the relationship. Knight Fealty is authoritative.

Ending Fealty

A Noble liege may honourably release a Knight with the relevant oath-release command.

Long service can produce Honour when the Knight is honourably released:

7+ days of Fealty+3 Honour
30+ days of Fealty+5 Honour

A Knight may also break Fealty themselves. Breaking a sworn Fealty is treated differently from honourable release and currently costs 15 Honour.

This makes how a relationship ends matter historically rather than treating every oath as a disposable toggle.

Personal Vows

Formally knighted players can also record personal Knightly vows through the oath system.

A personal vow is separate from Fealty. It does not create a liege and does not make the Knight a Household Knight.

A vow can later be fulfilled or broken. Breaking a recorded vow currently costs 5 Honour. The purpose is to let a Knight create commitments that have a persistent record without requiring every oath to be political service to a Noble.

Knightly Orders

Formally recognised Knights can create and join player-run Knightly Orders.

Orders provide a second type of Knight allegiance alongside Fealty. A Knight can therefore be politically sworn to a Noble while also belonging to an Order.

An Order contains members with internal ranks:

  • Knight
  • Marshal
  • Grandmaster

The founder becomes Grandmaster.

Order creation is tied to a Towny Hall location when the current configuration requires it. This gives an Order a physical headquarters rather than allowing it to exist as a purely abstract menu entry.

Joining an Order creates an Order oath/history relationship and grants 3 Honour for the first relevant join milestone.

Order Leadership

The Grandmaster is the head of the Order.

Order leadership can manage members, invite eligible Knights, promote members to Marshal, demote Marshals, transfer Grandmastership and expel members.

Factors such as rank matter:

  • ordinary Order Knights do not receive full management authority;
  • Marshals are officers;
  • Grandmaster is the final internal leader;
  • the Grandmaster cannot simply leave while still holding leadership and must transfer leadership or dissolve the Order first.

Becoming Marshal can grant 3 Honour. Becoming Grandmaster can grant 5 Honour.

Dishonourable expulsion can reduce the expelled Knight's Honour by 10.

Order Heraldry and Hall Standards

Knightly Orders can register heraldry using a finished Minecraft banner, much like Noble Houses.

The Order can produce its official banner/Hall Standard. Placed Standards remember which Order they belong to and display Order information when interacted with.

The Standard system validates the physical banner and Order record. Stale markers are cleared rather than leaving broken or unknown Order information attached to unrelated blocks.

Dissolved Orders can retain historical records rather than being erased from history.

Sacred Knightly Orders

A Knightly Order can become affiliated with a player-created Faith.

The process is not automatic. The Order's leadership requests religious patronage, and the relevant Faith authority may approve or reject the request.

After patronage is accepted, consecration is completed through the Faith/Clergy system at a valid consecrated religious altar. This creates an actual connection between the Order and the religious institution rather than allowing the Grandmaster to declare the Order sacred unilaterally.

Sacred Orders can have membership rules. The default configuration allows open membership, while a Faith-linked Order may be configured to require appropriate Faith membership where the system specifies it.

Religious patronage can later be released. Realignment across a religious schism is constrained to the relevant parent/daughter Faith relationship rather than arbitrary Faith hopping.

The Clergy Origin page contains the Faith side of Sacred Order patronage and consecration.

Squires

A formally knighted player must reach at least Recognised Standing before taking a Squire.

Use:

/knight squire invite [player]

The target must be an online non-Knight who is not already serving another mentor. The player must accept before the mentorship begins.

A Knight can have one current Squire, and a Squire can have one current Knight mentor.

The Knight may later formally recommend their Squire for Knighthood. Recommendation by itself does not instantly reward the mentor. If the recommended Squire later actually becomes formally knighted, the mentor receives the Squire-Knighted milestone and currently gains 8 Honour.

Either side can end the mentorship through the appropriate Squire controls before that happens.

This makes a Squire a genuine mentorship relationship rather than an NPC-style task slot.

Commendations

Formal commendations allow recognised authority figures to publicly acknowledge a Knight's conduct.

An Honour-bearing commendation can be issued by:

  • Nobles;
  • authorised Knightly Order officers; or
  • administrators.

The command records both the issuer and the written reason.

A valid commendation grants 5 Honour to the formally knighted recipient.

Anti-spam limits prevent commendations from becoming an Honour farm:

Issuer cooldown7 days before the same issuer can repeatedly grant Honour to that Knight.
Target cooldown1 day between Honour-bearing commendations received.

Accumulating the configured number of commendations can also contribute to milestone history.

Use /knight commendations to review formal commendation records.

Permanent Knight History

The Knight system records major actions such as formal Knighthood, oaths, Order membership and leadership, commendations, Squire milestones and important breaks/releases.

Use:

/knight history

or inspect an eligible Knight profile where supported.

The goal is for a veteran Knight's reputation to be readable from what they actually did rather than only from a numeric score.

Changing or Resetting the Knight Origin

An administrator cannot reset the Knight Origin while active Knight responsibilities would be orphaned.

Before reset, the Knight must resolve matters such as:

  • active Knightly Order membership or leadership;
  • a current Squire mentorship; and
  • active Knightly oaths.

Grandmasters may need to transfer leadership or dissolve an Order rather than simply leaving it.

Historical records can remain even after an active responsibility ends.

Origin summaryThe Knight Origin is about recognised conduct, obligations and social reputation. A Knight becomes important through who formally knighted them, what they swore, whether they kept those promises, which Order they served, who they mentored and how others publicly recognised them. Knighthood and Fealty remain separate, Honour is tied to meaningful events, and the system deliberately avoids turning Knight into a generic combat-stat class.
