Sonsy Vastala

The Heir of Ash

Sonsy Vastala is a surviving descendant of Aella Vastala and a claimant to the memory of the fallen Vastalan Crownrealm. For most of her childhood, neither she nor her family lived like royalty. They were poor eastern commoners whose lives were shaped less by dynastic ambition than by the repeated collapse of the states around them.

The ash in the east

Sonsy grew up beneath the changing rule of the Dhirmes and Castonian regimes. Her family owned little, but their home was stable and affectionate. The old stories of royal blood meant almost nothing beside her father’s laughter, her mother’s songs and the ordinary work of surviving from one season to the next.

That life ended with the fall of Catatonia. Neo-Dhirmic troops entered the region and the quiet countryside became another frontier of marching soldiers and burning settlements. Sonsy’s father decided that the family had already endured enough eastern instability. They gathered what they could carry and left for the Meadow, hoping distance would finally give them peace.

The horizon of Navalia

For a time, the Meadow appeared to be the refuge they had wanted. The family leased a small timber cottage near the border. Sonsy’s father found work in the mills and her mother returned to weaving. Their safety failed when rumours of tension with Navalia became reports of skirmishes, threatened supply lines and possible mobilisation.

Unwilling to be trapped by another war, the family fled into the wilderness. Near a large lake they were cornered by a Wildermen warband. Sonsy’s father died buying the others time to escape. Their improvised raft then failed halfway across the water, drowning her mother and sister. Sonsy reached the far shore alone.

AlderRose and the returning blood

After crossing the wilderness, Sonsy eventually reached AlderRose. There, the Shirespawn Emperor Pumpkin sensed the dormant Vastalan magic within her from across the bay. AlderRose stood close to a natural magic node, and that proximity awakened a power which had slept in her blood for generations. Sonsy entered the Laurelrealm of the Arescetian Imperium not as the poor refugee who had left the east, but as the Heir of Ash.
