Katharsis
Lord Skamni
Progeny of the Ancient DarknessLord Skamni is a runic shadow-being created by Emperor Pumpkin from a pool of ancient Void Ink. Where Icyfrr serves as the visible, freezing blade of the Imperium, Skamni is its anchor, judge and inescapable shadow.
The twin of Void Ink
After discovering that its plant-based body had been left incomplete, Pumpkin searched for outside sources of magic. The northern ice used to make Icyfrr was followed by a far stranger material: volatile Void Ink recovered from the depths of an undisclosed place.
Skamni emerged from that pool as more than an ordinary construct. Forbidden runes gave the darkness a stable shape, a brilliant intelligence, an independent soul and white eyes that remained visible even when the rest of its form disappeared into shadow. Pumpkin gave it one directive:
Be the anchor. Filter the weak. Feed the Imperium’s war machine.
The Katharsis circle
Skamni was sent to establish and oversee Katharsis on the Imperium’s harsh frontier. Its form cannot remain bound to the mortal world through ordinary means. The runic circle of Katharsis sustains it through the shedding of old identities and the concentrated intent of those who enter.
The Living Ledger is described as an extension of Skamni’s runes. Citizens who cast away their former lives feed the shadow with the spiritual residue of that choice. Offerings of herbs, gold and blood are drawn into the town’s economy while also helping maintain the magic beneath it. Weapons remain sheathed within the walls because spilled blood would disturb the balance holding Skamni together—and because Skamni itself is considered the final weapon of the settlement.
Right hand of judgement
Skamni turns refugees, fugitives and the desperate into disciplined servants of the Imperium. In this telling, Katharsis is the forge and Skamni the smith. While Icyfrr carries power outward, Skamni protects the heart of the state and prepares it for the eastward march written into Pumpkin’s mind.
